The Fine Art of Life

Open to the public: Suggested donation $5

Marshall Auditorium, Tucson Medical Center , Grant Rd. at Craycroft

Donald Kimon Lightner will introduce the Japanese Way of Tea as spiritual practice. This event will allow participants to become acquainted with Chado’s history, culture, related arts, meditative qualities, quiet aesthetic, graceful dignity and its ability to quench both a physical and spiritual thirst.

"Chado" (literally "the Way of Tea") is a synthesis of numerous arts and philosophies that combine into a systemized method of preparing, serving and drinking tea. Beyond being simply a ritual Chado is a spiritual discipline, a way of life; the fine art of living. The study of Chado cultivates both physical discipline and concentration and can last a lifetime.

Having been nurtured on Japanese soil, it represents the quintessence of Japanese aesthetics and culture. But, over and beyond this, people far and wide from all cultures have discovered that life is beautified by this Way --- by the spirit that guides its practice, as well as by the objects and environment which express that spirit and are an integral part of its practice.

Donald Kimon Lightner is a licensed acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist, Zen Buddhist monk, ceramic artist, Chinese calligrapher and teacher of Urasenke Chado.
